Study Information

Who are the participants?
In Wave 1, males aged between the ages of 10 and 55 years from randomly selected metropolitan, regional and rural areas across the country will be invited to join the study. The final study group will be approximately 20,000 men and boys. Areas have been randomly chosen to ensure that the study group includes men and boys with a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences.
What can I expect?
Research staff from Roy Morgan Research will be door-knocking in your area and inviting all males aged 10-55 living in the household to participate. Of those interested in joining, boys aged 10-14 years will be interviewed face-to-face in their home. Everyone else will be given a paper survey to fill out. Our research staff will later return to collect the completed survey. For boys and young men under the age of 18, a parent’s permission is required to join the study.

Since it is impossible to ask about everything in the survey, we plan to include extra health related information that is available from other sources including environmental information and health data.

We are asking for your home and work/school addresses so we can include information about amenities and services available to you, such as the number of parks and sporting facilities, and the number of doctors and other health services in your area. This information is important to better understand how people's neighbourhoods affect their health.

We are also interested in patterns of service use and the occurrence of particular health conditions over time. We can look at these by adding information from other health databases, including Medicare and disease registers, for example, cancer registers.

We will follow up with you every 2 to 3 years to see how your health is going.

We may occasionally contact you to let you know about other smaller more specialised male health studies that you might be interested in joining. It is up to you if you want to join any of these studies.

Any information you provide us and any information we include from other sources will be kept in the strictest confidence and access will be limited to authorised researchers.
For Adults 18-55 years
A Roy Morgan researcher will provide you with a Survey Booklet and a Study Information Booklet that has all the information you need about participating in the study.

The survey should take about 30 to 40 minutes to complete. It covers a wide range of topics about health and lifestyle. Some questions are personal or about sensitive issues, but you do not have to answer any questions you do not want to.

The front cover of the Survey Booklet is the Consent Form where you provide your consent to join the study and for the study to include information from other health datasets.

The back cover of the Survey Booklet is the Information Sheet for you to provide your name and other contact details so we can keep in touch for follow-up surveys.

These two documents are separated and returned to the research office separately from your completed survey to protect the confidentiality of your survey responses.

The researcher will arrange to return to your home to collect the completed survey and forms at a time convenient to you.

You will be entered into the prize draw to win one of a hundred $100 gift vouchers for either iTunes, JB HIFI, Bunnings Warehouse or Coles/Myer. You will be notified by phone if you win.
For Young Men 15-17 years old
A Roy Morgan researcher will provide you with a Survey Booklet and a Study Information Booklet that has all the information you need about participating in the study.

The survey should take about 30 to 40 minutes to complete. It covers a wide range of topics about health and lifestyle. Some questions are personal or about sensitive issues, but you do not have to answer any questions that you do not want to.

The first two pages of the Survey Booklet are the Consent Forms. There is an Assent Form for you to provide your consent to join the study and for the study to include information from other health data sets. There is also a Parent Consent Form which a parent or guardian must complete in order for you to participate.

For Boys 10-14 years old
Once you and your parents have agreed, the Roy Morgan researcher will arrange a time for an interview at your house.

The interview has questions about your health and lifestyle and should take about 30 minutes. There are some questions that are personal, but you do not have to answer any question you do not want to.

We will ask your parent(s) to go to another room during the interview to keep your answers private. But if you want them to be in the room during the interview they can stay.

Before the interview starts, you will be asked to fill in an Assent Form which is your agreement to join the study, and if you are 14 years it also includes your agreement for the study to look at other health records. Your parents will also need to fill in a form consenting for you to join the study.

You will go into the prize draw to win one of a hundred $100 gift vouchers for either iTunes, JB HIFI, Bunnings Warehouse or Coles/Myer. We will call you and tell you if you have won.
For parents of boys aged 10-14 years
To capture health and family information that your son might not know, there is a brief paper Parent Survey. The Roy Morgan Research interviewer will provide you with the Parent Survey.

There are two parts to the Parent Survey – Part A is questions about your son’s health and background. If you have more than one son participating you will receive a Part A for each son. Part B is background information on yourself and household. Together they should take about 15 minutes to complete.

The front cover of Part A is your consent for your son to participate in the study. The front cover of Part B is your consent for your own participation.

The back cover of Part B is an Information Sheet for you to provide your name and other contact details so we can keep in touch to follow-up on your son’s health over time.

These documents are separated and returned to the research office separately from your completed survey to protect the confidentiality of your responses.
